The ESSO Can - Private Collection - 100x100 cm + Its American-Style Crate

This captivating artwork features an ESSO oil can, once a symbol of the petroleum industry and mass consumption, now transformed by the passage of time and the elements. The crushed and deformed can, a symbol of industrial decline, rests on a smooth surface, evoking a forensic scene.

Rust, omnipresent across the entire surface of the can, creates a rich and complex texture. Shades of brown, orange, and red blend and overlap, bearing witness to the progressive oxidation of the metal. The letters "ESSO," once proudly displayed in white and red against a blue background, are recognizable, faded by years of corrosion and weathering.

The creases and dents of the crushed can reveal a story of pressure and force, suggesting either a violent impact or a slow, inexorable compression. These deformations add a sculptural dimension to the object, transforming it into an almost organic form, evoking the ruins and vestiges of a bygone era.

I use this humble, forgotten object to tell a larger story about the fragility of modernity and the inevitability of decline. The ESSO oil can thus becomes an industrial memento mori, a meditation on how human creations are inexorably claimed by time and nature.

The juxtaposition of the former advertising splendor and the current state of decay invites the viewer to reflect on the transient nature of consumption and technology, as well as to reconsider the value of the objects that surround us. Ultimately, this work transforms a simple oil can into a powerful metaphor for transformation and decay.
